Bodies of Water is inspired by the delicate and timeless relationship between freshwater mussels and the health of our waterways. Often referred to as ‘living rocks,’ freshwater mussels play an essential role in quietly filtering our rivers. Today, nearly half of the world’s freshwater mussels are listed as imperilled. This rapid population decline reflects habitat alteration, pollution and the loss of fish hosts. The book, a small object with ceramic shell-like covers, is held together by intricate butterfly-shaped accordion folds. Within these pages, plankton, algae, and detritus flow against the backdrop of moving waters, around and through the bivalve. Through its nonlinear form, the accordion bookwork illustrates all bodies of water as a connected entity. It emphasizes the impact of water health on the ecology that freshwater mussels depend on to survive.

Eternal Sunset was developed when Son Ni was printing her book Travel (nos:books, 2016). Challenges of aligning the layers on the Risograph presented the artist with a flickering Sun oscillating on the page. Son says, 'Like in the story of The Little Prince, he lives in a tiny planet, and he can watch the sunset all day long by just moving his chair'. Eternal Sunset is a poetic take of a lingering Sun above the horizon, a continuous sunset in the form of a flip book.

Nauta and Luk's interest in horticulture and flora led the artists to the creation of their fourth title together. Photos culled from the artists' daily encounters with local plants and flowers in both Canada and Japan are presented in conjunction with new collaborative works, collages by Nauta and drawings by Luk. Photographs in high contrast appear deliberately graphic alongside drawings and collages. A reflection and contemplation on their different surroundings, Flowers from a distance offers a glimpse into a long distance friendship and ongoing collaboration.

JAM ON TOAST is a selection of responses written in conversation with friends and artists about painting. The project was organized by Katie Lyle and developed from a series of studio visits between summer 2014 and summer 2015 in Toronto. Lyle’s responses have been edited in an attempt to share a voice that reflects the process of figuring something out in the studio, the same way that paintings in the studio are not the same as artwork in an exhibition or gallery setting. Thinking about studio visits as a specific view of the process of making something, and figuring something out. Finally, each artist was invited to respond to the project in whichever way they wanted. These have been included loosely as responses.

This concertina book is Eunice Luk and Alicia Nauta's second collaborative bookwork. Two moods are explored, one on each side. The 'Milk' side features shifting
hand drawn line work and collaged geometric symbols on top of a smoky grey gradient, disappearing into the paper, then reemerging. The 'Flame' side features similar
imagery and offers a parallel universe of drawings and collages combined with a yellow gradient. Can be displayed a variety of ways and considered from all angles.

Opening Strings is a combination of collage and drawing, with organic lines and marks juxtaposed with found images and clean geometric shapes. Screen printed by hand in two blue tones, Opening Strings presents an abstract narrative that dips and glides. The title alludes to classical symphonies in which melodies intertwine and play off each other to create a full, unified sound.

20 years after its debut, Slow Editions is please to present a reissue of Japanese electronic composer-pianist Miroque's masterpiece “Botanical Sunset” on cassette tape with brand new artwork. The album was originally released on CD by Japanese label 360° Records in 2001.
A strikingly beautiful world emerges from buoyant, enchanting compositions and colourful arrangements on the synthesizer. Miroque meticulously weaves a fantastical and dreamy soundscape bubbling with possibilities. A wavering light shimmers throughout the album, emitting a brilliant atmosphere through its glowing melodies rich in sonic textures and instrumental rhythm. ‘Botanical Sunset’ is an important electronic work that connects Japanese kankyo ongaku and contemporary ambient music (Hiroshi Yoshimura’s Green, Haruomi Hosono’s Mercuric Dance to Green-house’s Music for living spaces). The timeless album needs to be heard with new ears and interpretation.

Japanese multi-instrumentalist Masahiro Takahashi's latest album is a meditation on seasons and distance, recorded in isolation at his temporary home studio in Toronto. Following “the coldest winter I have ever experienced,” he began crafting hushed, lush vignettes of color wheel electronics with an array of software synthesizers, granular samplers, plug-in FX, MIDI controllers, and a shruti box.
The songs sway, shimmer, and unspool in sparkling arcs, between reverie and lullaby, inspired variously by blooming apple trees, gagaku music, the “nostalgia of immigrants,” and longing for home. Flowering Tree, Distant Moon moves from soothing to surreal, a swirl of quiet melody and imagined landscapes, as transportive for its listeners as its maker: “I dreamt of places outside my room and traced the music from my memories.”

For the inaugural issue of Sound Journal, ‘Do-Nothing’, musicians were asked to compose ‘music you listen to when you don’t want to do anything’. Six ambient musicians from Japan and Belgium, 夕方の犬(u ・ェ・), H. TAKAHASHI, Hegira Moya, Endurance, takao and Lieven Martens (Dolphins into the future) contributed unique interpretations on the theme. The result: the edges around your body softening, the feeling of slowly sinking in, absorbed by your environment, fixating your sight at a Japanese rock garden; effortless relaxation met with an unexpected destination. Sampling from field recordings and layering arrangements from a variety of instruments, Takahashi thoughtfully crafted an inviting and vibrating instrumental record. It sounds like: A lush and misty forest, a moody evening by the creek, a dark cave lit by a single, flickering candle. It's warm and muddy but with a crisp clarity at the same time.
